This is a typical course of fire, CMSA has 62 sanctioned courses of fire. A match will typically draw randomly six stages of these 62 courses that will set the stages for the match. Horse and rider must manipulate the course while engaging targets (Balloons). The idea is very simple, manipulate the course in the most effective way while following the course of fire in order to be the fastest without missing a target.

Penalties
Missed Balloon 5 Seconds Each
Knocked over Barrel 5 Seconds Each
Procedural- Not following course of fire up to max 10 Seconds
Notice the clothing that this rider is wearing a fun part of the sport is the 1800 styles clothing, the guns are modeled after the original peacemaker which were single action revolvers (You have to pull the hammer back each time you shoot). The ammo we use is sanctioned, and manufactured specifically for CMSA. They are blanks with just enough powder to engage a target which are safe for spectators, contestants and their horses. Most types of horses are being used and can be trained to compete, and like roping and team penning their are individual classes starting at level 1 moving up through the ranks to a level 6 (World Champion) This includes Juniors (yrs) and Seniors.
